making invention work
Yesterday I spoke about making invention work at DeutschLA as part of a series of talks around invention and creativity. See more of the talks here.
As a side note, every time I do a talk, I tend to write an entirely new script and try out entirely new thoughts. I get easily bored at hearing myself speak, so I try to only say new things. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. I know some people who give the same talk over and over again, I just don’t have the stamina for it. I blame the internet.
Correction: I just listened to myself and I incorrectly said I helped “found” UC – that’s not right. Josh, Aaron, and Rob did that, I was merely one of the first strategists back when we shared an office with Coolhunting. My sincere bad.

Are the slides posted somewhere, Bud?
Just getting started, but sounds like a great talk.
Hi Bud, finally catching up on this since I wasn’t in town when it happened. You talk about the death of the big idea in this – would love to hear your thoughts on the role of story telling. i read an article in the NYT that mentioned a theory our brains are becoming more task-oriented and have less ability to focus because of the internet and smartphone useage. Will we no longer need a big idea? Thanks for posting the talk. jen
I don’t think the big idea is necessarily dead. I think the big execution should be. The big bet. We’re operating in stochastic systems, single bets are just a recipe for disaster. I think brands can stand for big ideas, and that idea should be manifested by lots of small experiments that can be amplified once they gain some traction.
