dear john

Hi there, John Mayer.

More than 5 months ago I was putting together plans for including you in a groundbreaking use of augmented reality. I actually got in touch (through friends) with people from your record label, your management company, your friends, and even rallied your fans to put the idea in front of you. I know with certainty you’ve seen the site.

But you never responded.

You might be able to guess my reaction today when I found this post on Mashable: John Mayer Releases Augmented Reality Music Video

“Today … Mayer has been able to make music and technology history as the first recording artist to release an augmented reality music video.”

I wonder where in the world you got the idea from?

Not cool, John.

augmented reality and the bandwagon

bandwagon

Lately, I’m hearing a lot of back and forth these days over Augmented Reality.

As it happens with technology, more evenly distributed tech (webcams and smartphones) has lead to a step forward (AR) which has lead to a rise in applications and adoption. Call it progress or call it a bandwagon, either way, we’re seeing some particularly smart uses of the technologies at hand.

When most people consider a bandwagon, they see two options: jump on or stay off, proselytize or condemn. Of course, this is a false dilemma.

The third option is to remain curious – and to use technology to serve a purpose. Most of us are talking to clients about the technology, and it’s up to us as intelligent thinkers to determine if AR really can serve a purpose for our client’s business. Disregard those that blow wind, listen to your own damn self.

But I will say this, ignoring and avoiding advances in technology, even those you may deem superfluous, is the quickest road to irrelevance. Technological literacy is a demand of our modern era; sussing out how things work is critical to understanding how things will change.

I need your help to spread the word and move the world. Well, the world that is, John Mayer.

I’m looking to create an interactive augmented reality experience with John Mayer. The idea is to film John in a surrounded green screen environment, recording a series of bars that will be mixed and mashed by the user. They’ll use an interface to select their desired sequence of riffs, print out a chevron that will be read by their webcam, and a micro-sized John Mayer will appear to play through that sequence. The idea is to leverage the existing musician community on YouTube to record videos of themselves playing along with John. Picture John on someone’s snare drum head as they play along.

John’s a great fit for this idea b/c he’s a heavy tech geek like the rest of us, and he doesn’t mind having a little fun with himself.

How can you help? Tweet @johncmayer and tell him @bud_caddell has an awesome opportunity for him. Point him to my li’l website and help #tinymayer become a trending topic.
