saving lives with a banner ad – the backstory
29 Jan, 2010 • posts i've written • 8 comments
On Monday of this week, I shared an idea on the blog that I’ve been a bit obsessed with for some time now – using advertising space on the web to spread the word about missing children in your area.
I also submitted the idea to Redesign Our World – a platform of the World Economic Forum – and many of you visited the site and endorsed the idea. Thank you.
A few of you actually sent me the email addresses of Google employees, and together, I have no doubt that we will clog the Googleplex with emails and sincere notes of interest.
And since so many of you showed such passion and empathy and support, I keep coming back to the same conclusion: we are far more benefited by sharing than by hoarding. Information can bond us, it can illuminate connections between us that we were unaware of, and it can remind us of our shared humanity. The web makes sharing information so much easier, but we make it meaningful.
In that spirit, and in the selfish hope that you’ll continue to support the idea, spread it to your friends and followers, and help me see some permutation of it come online – I’d like to share a bit more information with you.

If it’s on the web, it better not be static. And if you want people to care, you gotta be willing to piss someone off. If every brand advertised by those two tiny rules, online advertising wouldn’t be nearly the flea circus act it is.
