hold me closer tiny mayer

hmc2

I need your help to spread the word and move the world. Well, the world that is, John Mayer.

I’m looking to create an interactive augmented reality experience with John Mayer. The idea is to film John in a surrounded green screen environment, recording a series of bars that will be mixed and mashed by the user. They’ll use an interface to select their desired sequence of riffs, print out a chevron that will be read by their webcam, and a micro-sized John Mayer will appear to play through that sequence. The idea is to leverage the existing musician community on YouTube to record videos of themselves playing along with John. Picture John on someone’s snare drum head as they play along.

John’s a great fit for this idea b/c he’s a heavy tech geek like the rest of us, and he doesn’t mind having a little fun with himself.

How can you help? Tweet @johncmayer and tell him @bud_caddell has an awesome opportunity for him. Point him to my li’l website and help #tinymayer become a trending topic.

the rock-afire explosion

Aaron Fechter engineered the original stage set of the Rock-afire Explosion from the old Showbiz Pizza Place franchises. So obviously, Aaron knows how to re-program and choreograph the band. So what else would he do but setup a website where you bid on a popular song to be ‘Rock-afired’ by the band? So far Aaron has completed 9 songs, and racked up over $3300.

See the full list of completed songs.

UPDATE! Someone has made a documentary about people who still own and operate Rock-afire Explosion bands… watch the trailer!

cash money for the mashup

Courtesy of Buzzfeed. I watch this type of content and I wish I could open my wallet and give money straight to this artist for their deft build of the mashup. Glorious stuff here. This is atypical, this is remarkable, and this is what could save the music biz if the old guard would simply fade away. Enjoy.

the value of music

I want to write for your blog. Gratis. But you have to give me a great question or profound thought to ponder. Like Tom Williams did. Tom runs Hit Singularity where he writes about the intersection of music, business, and technology. Tom asked me to contemplate the value and price of music today.

The industry loves to blame the digital format and piracy for the erosion of their business. And as long as they do, they’ll continue to go the way of the dinosaur – and good riddance. Simply put, music is less culturally relevant today than it was in the 1950’s. Bob Dylan won’t be reincarnated. That popularity with that cultural message doesn’t happen anymore. Why? Well, for one, the industry today doesn’t think like John Hammond did. They aren’t looking for Dylans. Moreover, today’s mainstream is an emaciated corpse of its former self. Our interests and musical genres themselves have splintered. The industry saw demand slipping so they raised the cost of the concert ticket. They hope to sell the song for nothing so you’ll hear the band and want to pay the $50 to see them live. They practically asked for their own irrelevance.

iTunes Search with Amazon’s DRM-Free store = Advantageous

There’s no denying that Apple’s iTunes Store is both well designed and chock-full of music, TV shows and movies for you to buy. It’s also got a rather awesome Genius feature for playlist creation [whilst cunningly up-selling you more tunes via the Genius Sidebar]. However when it comes to buying music, a large proportion of it remains crippled (and at 128kbps bit-rate) thanks to the iTunes Store’s FairPlay DRM. Sure, there’s iTunes Plus: but the selection remains lacking thanks to the devious tactics of the record labels. Amazon, on the other hand has had a high-bitrate DRM-free store for sometime.

Thankfully, there’s now a new option that allows you to make the most of Apple’s excellent store: and then skip over to Amazon to actually buy the music: Advantageous. Simply run the Advantageous installer, and a script [added to your iTunes Script menu shown above] will take the currently-selected track from the iTunes store, open your default browser and load the relevant Amazon search page.

It’s a neat, and above-all free, timesaver that may just provide an incentive for iTunes Store addicts to go DRM-free. Advantageous requires Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, and iTunes 8.
