I need your help to spread the word and move the world. Well, the world that is, John Mayer.

I’m looking to create an interactive augmented reality experience with John Mayer. The idea is to film John in a surrounded green screen environment, recording a series of bars that will be mixed and mashed by the user. They’ll use an interface to select their desired sequence of riffs, print out a chevron that will be read by their webcam, and a micro-sized John Mayer will appear to play through that sequence. The idea is to leverage the existing musician community on YouTube to record videos of themselves playing along with John. Picture John on someone’s snare drum head as they play along.

John’s a great fit for this idea b/c he’s a heavy tech geek like the rest of us, and he doesn’t mind having a little fun with himself.

Aaron Fechter engineered the original stage set of the Rock-afire Explosion from the old Showbiz Pizza Place franchises. So obviously, Aaron knows how to re-program and choreograph the band. So what else would he do but setup a website where you bid on a popular song to be ‘Rock-afired’ by the band? So far Aaron has completed 9 songs, and racked up over $3300.

This is atypical, this is remarkable, and this is what could save the music biz if the old guard would simply fade away. Enjoy.

The industry loves to blame the digital format and piracy for the erosion of their business. And as long as they do, they’ll continue to go the way of the dinosaur – and good riddance. Simply put, music is less culturally relevant today than it was in the 1950’s. Bob Dylan won’t be reincarnated. That popularity with that cultural message doesn’t happen anymore. Why? Well, for one, the industry today doesn’t think like John Hammond did. They aren’t looking for Dylans. Moreover, today’s mainstream is an emaciated corpse of its former self. Our interests and musical genres themselves have splintered. The industry saw demand slipping so they raised the cost of the concert ticket. They hope to sell the song for nothing so you’ll hear the band and want to pay the $50 to see them live. They practically asked for their own irrelevance.
